2014 Peace Week and Peace in Action Summit
A four-day event: January 28 - 31, 2014
UC Irvine Student Center
Peace Week is an initiative to build a more compassionate community by expanding our knowledge of how peacebuilding and nonviolence can be used in everyday life to resolve interpersonal, intergroup, and international conflicts. The event includes experts and program directors of the peace-field, survivors of violence, founders of nonprofits, and professors of altruism and compassion.

Tuesday, January 28th
5:30pm - 8pm Arts for Promoting Peace: live music, spoken word, art! - Pacific Ballrooms ABC
Promoting peace through creative expression. Event included dance and music performances, spoken word pieces, art on display, and our featured artist: Aliza Hava.
Wednesday, January 29th
7pm Keynote Speaker: Philanthropist, entrepreneur & neurosurgeon James R. Doty, (Stanford University MD, UC Irvine BS) spoke on the culture of compassion - Pacific Ballroom D

Thursday, January 30th
Peace in Action Summit Day 1
12:30pm - 6:30pm (1 hour sessions) Learn mediation and communication skills. Take a workshops on practicing nonviolence. Attend panels on Challenging Violence and Learning to Forgive
Taking Action to Stop Violence: Workshops and Panels
Courageous Conversations: What's Your Story?
12:30-1:30 p.m., Student Center, Doheny Beach Room B
Workshop hosted by Orange County Human Relations (OCHR) on diversity and examining
one's own culture.
Courageous Conversations: Learning how to Listen and to be Heard
1:45-2:45 p.m., Student Center, Doheny Beach Room B
Workshop hosted by OCHR on perception and the art of active listening.
Panel: Challenging Violence
3:00-4:00 p.m., Student Center, Doheny Beach Room A
Panelists will share their stories of overcoming violence and the work they are accomplishing
through their businesses and programs to combat violence.
Practicing Nonviolence
4:15-5:15 p.m., Student Center, Doheny Beach Room B
Workshop by Angelina Dayfallah, certified trainer in Kingian Nonviolence. She will
introduce Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's philosophy and methodology of nonviolence.
Panel: Learning to Forgive
5:30-6:30 p.m., Student Center, Doheny Beach Room A
Panelists will share how they overcame losses of loved ones due to violence and how
they transformed their grief and anger into reconciliation and restorative justice
programs. There will also be a discussion on the research of altruism and compassion.
Friday, January 31st
Peace in Action Summit Day Two
Peacebuilding, Locally and Globally
9am - 2pm Peace Education Panel & NGOs: Discover the global progress of peace education. Become a peacebuilder! Network with Nonprofits
Panel: Peace Education Globally
9:00-11:00 a.m., Social and Behavioral Sciences Gateway, Room 1517
Panelists are leaders of peace education programs and will discuss: the status of
peace education globally, research on the efficacy of peace education, and the campaign
to foster peace education worldwide.
Networking with Nonprofits
11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Student Center, Pacific Ballroom C
Opportunity for student organizations and community members to connect with local
nonprofits and find opportunities to volunteer or intern.
Forum: Peace Education Locally
3:00-5:00 p.m., Student Center, Pacific Ballroom C
Southern California leaders of K-12 and college peace education programs will discuss
best practices and visions for the future, along with discussing the Compassionate
School and Compassionate University campaigns.
